A digest of

Do not start with a joke, give people empowerment promise, tell the people what they are going to know at the end of the hour.
Cycle, repeat the most important idea in the talk because people sometimes would fog out, you need to let them get the point.
Distinguish your idea from others’ ideas.
“My algorithm might seem similar to Jack’s algorithm, except his is exponential, mine is linear”
Verbal punctuation can build a landmark, to let the people who fog out to get back on the bus
Ask a question, wait for an answer for 7 seconds, the question can’t be too obvious, because then people will feel embarrassed to answer the question, can’t be too hard because then nobody will have anything to say
When to have a lecture? The time when people would not feel sleepy or fatigued, not nearly the time to eat
Where to have a lecture?
Even today, when I speak to the audio-visual people, I would say “keep the lights full up”
They might reply ”people will see the slides better if we turn the lights off”, then I would reply, “it is extremely hard to see slides through closed eyelids.” lol
If you gonna rob a bank, you would go to the bank in advance, to see what it’s like, so there are no surprises when you do your robbery. Same as the speech, you need to get to the place in advance to check.
The size of the room: doesn't have to be packed, but it has to be more than half full
Use chalk.
You can use this to draw lines between something.
The speed you write is approximately the people can absorb the idea, if you flipping through a bunch of slides, nobody can go that fast.
You would have something to do with your hands. Many people who are novices at speaking, would put their hands in their pockets, or alternatively, their hands would go in back, it looks like they might have a weapon.
You can constantly point at the board, even the content you are pointing to has nothing to do with what you saying.
